The U.T. of Puducherry, has its significance due to late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who has envisaged a special status for Puducherry, to preserve the window to the French culture in India. The U.T. of Puducherry comprises of four regions viz. Pondicherry (Puducherry), Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.

Pondicherry and Karaikal are enclaves in Tamil Nadu State; Mahe forms an enclave in Kerala, and Yanam in Andhra Pradesh. The U.T. of Puducherry has several reputed industries and is poised for a spectacular growth, due to the industrial friendly policies and tax benefit provided by the Government. Accordingly, several renowned industries located in Puducherry, look for well trained technicians to meet their human resource needs.

To meet the demands, Women’s Polytechnic College, Puducherry, was established in the year 1988 to fulfill the long cherished ambition of the people of Puducherry and to meet the demand of technicians due to the rapid industrialization in and around Puducherry region of the Union Territory of Puducherry.  The administration of the Polytechnic College is managed by Pondicherry Institute of Post-Matric Technical Education (PIPMATE) and governed by a Governing Body under the Chairmanship of the Secretary to Govt. (Education), Govt. of Puducherry and with Director of Higher and Technical Education, Govt. of Puducherry as the Member Secretary.

Women’s Polytechnic College is situated at Lawspet, which is about 7 km from the bus-stand in Pondicherry town. It is functioning in an elegant, architect designed, spacious buildings, built under the World Bank Assisted Technician Education Project- “Tech-Ed-II”. It houses spacious laboratories equipped with hi-tech state-of-art equipment’s, a fully equipped students centre, a well-developed playground, a Learning Resource User Centre etc. and all other facilities required for all round development of the students.
